Brief History of the Medical Faculty
The Medical Faculty in Stara Zagora began as a Higher Institute of Medicine to prepare medical
doctors
within the framework of the Medical Academy by a Minister Council resolution on April 8,
1982.

The goal was to bring higher medical education and qualified medical help to the people of southeastern
Bulgaria. It existed as an autonomous institution of higher education until 1995 when it was integrated into the
newly established Thracian University (National Assembly resolution of July 17, 1995, published on August 1,
1995 in the official state newspaper, issue 68) and became the Medical Faculty.

The main mission of the Medical Faculty is to satisfy the need for human resources in higher medical
education, providing medical doctors for the health care system in Bulgaria. An additional mission of the Faculty
is to train foreign students, which adds to the image of Bulgaria as a highly developed country with a preferred
medical educational system.
The University is a state educational institution.
